VICTORIA CHARO AND HAPPY CHARO

I am Happy and my younger sister is called Victoria. Our parents died when we were still very young. We were then taken to our grandmother who lived alone in Kilifi.

Young as we were, we could see her struggles to fend for us. Her old makuti-roofed house would leak whenever it rained and we would hurdle together to keep warm since avoiding the raindrops was close to impossible.

We were unable to go to school regularly due to lack of school fees and uniforms. Since we had to make do with a meal once a day, we would be too weak to go anywhere and it was better to stay at home.

Luckily, a pastor’s wife who comes from the area heard of our suffering and brought us to Minto Children’s Home.

We both sat for the Kenya Certificate of Secondary School Education this year and have high hopes of doing well.

We will forever be grateful to Mama Susan for taking care of us as her own.
